What are you doing this Labor Day weekend? Labor Day is seen as the unofficial end of summer by many. I was just doing a little research on the origins of Labor Day and there is some doubt about who started the Labor Day holiday. Some records show that it was Peter J. McGuire who started the holiday. There is another group that believe that Matthew Maguire, not Peter McGuire, founded the holiday. Either way I think my ancestors were right to pay tribute to the creator of so much of the nation’s strength, freedom, and leadership, the American worker.
Here is a list of event going on in our region.
Chalk-it Up
Chalk-It-Up is a nonprofit organization created to benefit children’s arts education and art activities. Funds are raised through an annual chalk art festival held each Labor Day Weekend since 1991. The festival features over 200 sidewalk paintings created at the festival by local artists who donate their time, energy, and talent. These concrete masterpieces are left on the sidewalk for the public to enjoy throughout the month of September. The pieces are done with soft chalk pastel mixed with water. The squares are divided into five categories.
When: September 5th – 7th 10am – 6PM everyday
Where: Fremont Park, at 15th & P Streets

Go out and celebrate the end of the summer season this Labor Day or sit on the couch and do nothing, you deserve it.

I will have my Number 1 Hired Hand available for four(4) days.

Yippee.
Wow, no one can say there's never anything to do around here.
We don't have any solid plans but the Greek Festival sounds like alot of fun. I've been to several Greek Festivals in the past back in my college days and had a blast. We ate some of the best Greek food and even tried Greek dancing. Would love to do that again!
Since I've procrastinated all summer, I'll probably get to all the yard work and projects I've put off. After this weekend, I have 10 weeks or more of soccer and football on the weekend, and after that is Thanksgiving, then Christmas, then the rainy season, then Spring. So if I don't get things done this weekend, it could be next summer before I get around to them again.

Good thing I don't have a ranch to look after.
I will be dog sitting this wknd. The kids are going camping and I get to take care of "the baby"....Whoopie.....!!!!
In a surprise development, I believe TLOTM will be golfing. Young Master has some pets to sit, and I'm pretty sure I've got a friend coming over on Saturday, so hanging by the pool and swapping stories (and me being contrary if for no other reason than to get him wound up...heh, heh, heh...good times!
)
Taking my mom to dinner on Sunday for her b-day. She got a coupon and wants to go to the Buggywhip. Never been there, but I hear back in the day it was THE PLACE!
I have some magazines and books to catch up on/get back to, so mostly a relaxed weekend around The Manor.
I'm going to Wear WHITE all weekend, because you can't wear White after Labor Day.
(you should come over and look at the patchwork of colors I've painted on my house...it looks sorta like a quilt! Bring it, Compliance!
Sky Drifters Ballooning will be participating at the "Color the Skies" Charity balloon festival in Ripon.
Yes we know, there is NOTHING To see in Ripon! But it is for a good cause and we have participated in the event for the last two years in a row.
More here. http://colortheskies.com/
For those that are really into balloons we will also be attending the Reno Hot Air Balloon races September the 10th. thru September 13th. This is the closest place anyone here can go and see 90+ balloons take off and fly together. More here. The Great Reno Balloon Race
Everyone have a great weekend!

Digging some post holes, pouring cement, evening the ground, adding turf and adding a chain link fence along the side of our home for a puppy/dog secure open dog run.

Wish me luck
If headed to Yosemite:
Ignite a controlled burn in late August? "The Big Meadow prescribed fire was initiated based upon a written and predetermined window of very specific conditions, temperature, humidity, fuel type, wind speed, smoke dispersal," responded Dave Uberuaga, acting superintendent at Yosemite.
The foul-up has closed Big Oak Flat Road to Yosemite Valley and closed Tioga Road, campgrounds at Crane Flat and Tamarack Flat (and may close White Wolf and Tuolumne Meadows campgrounds), Yosemite View Lodge and Old El Portal, and trails to El Capitan from big Oak Flat, Rockslides and Tamarack Creek trailheads. Smoke also has obscured the world-class views. Yosemite National Park, (209) 372-0200, nps.gov/yose.
Late reply, but I think I may have topped you all with my plans this time! Praying for the birth of our first child to happen very soon, due date is tomorrow, the 6th. Hoping to make it a very ironic labor day indeed!
I've heard baking cookies and mopping the floor will bring on labor. When can you be here?
No matter the day, here's hoping for an easy labor and a healthy baby and mom! We'll be anxiously awaiting the news of our new neighbor's arrival!
Lab, let us know of the heir's arrival! Ironically, my neighbor is also due on Labor Day--she's still home, no baby in sight.
Anyone hear from our "lady in waiting"?? Today is my #2 son's birthday...I was also a "labor day mom"........!!!

Lab Lover, u still there
Well, I ended up visitng d-i-l and grandkids in Citrus Heights. Surprisingly little traffic up the back way and down 50 to Hazel. 3-year-old and I made a "special" tuna casserole for when Daddy gets home from work. She was such a great helper until I asked her to put away the box of saran wrap. Rather than be put away, it was unrolled all the way through two rooms!
Those are the times that make memories Grandma......Aren't they fun!!!
Great fun, Mama. . .until you order a two-minute time-out and she pouts, then announces, "Me no like Nana any more!" I tried to get her to use correct grammar but it still came out with the s
ame meaning!
lab_lover it's time to start taking long walks. I hear it's one of two things that will help bring on labor.

I'm still waiting. If he doesn't make his debut in the next week we will be induced. Tomorrow would be a cool birthday, 09/09/09!

Either way, I wish you well with your delivery.
Ranch isn't far off with the cleaning/scrubbing idea--part of the maternal nesting instinct; so, Martha, maybe she will come over and offer household assistance!
Cowboy OB/GYN Logic goes as so (note: California is completely different, for Cattle).

Momma Cow is bred in the Fall for a Spring Delivery.
Springtime comes to The Rocky Mt. States and 1,000's of Momma Cows are ready to drop.
Momma Cow knows that her Baby is very vulnerable to Big Bad Wolf and Wiley Coyote for the first few days. Baby is born with a strong smell and Big Bad Wolf and Wiley Coyote can pick up that smell for miles around.
Momma Cow will go off by herself when the time comes.
Low Air Pressure brings storms to the Rockies, as it does here.
Storms mean high winds and blowing snow, two disturbances that can throw off Big Bad Wolf and Wile Coyote.
Years of Momma Cow Experience has taught Momma Cow to feel the air pressure change and if she is feeling close she will time things for those Spring Storms.
Low air pressure also means, well, less pressure pushing in on Momma Cow, which makes her job even easier.
See, Cowboy OB/GYN Logic!
P.S. Someday the "65 Straight Nights near Centennial, Wy, Delivering Babies" Story will fit inta a Post.

1) We are "bred" anytime, not just in the fall..( gawd, the men would really throw a hiss!!!!
2) We don't "drop" em...!!!
3) Our babies do smell at times, but not even an animal comes near!! Only poor mom and dad to do the cleaning!!
4) When its our time, we want all the hospital staff there and lots of pain killers!!!
5) We don't give a darn what the weather is or how hard the wind is blowing...doesn't do a thing for us!!!
But thanks for the lesson on birthing cows....us city folks didn't know all that stuff, but you country boys didn't know about birthing babies either.........
Nature is Nature.

When again are you becomming a GMa again?
