Default CRES Reading Levels

Could some of you veteran parents help out a newbie? What's the scoop on the book reading levels? First Graders are reading leveled books likely part of the Open Court system. How were/are these determined? Rug Rat is already reading his level and has accurately determined where he is in reading pecking order. Including who is High and who is Low. Hate to see it start so early. Anyway, I'll talk to his teacher but I'd love some in the trenches insight.

Very soon the teachers are able to determine the more advanced readers thereby placing them in a higher reading group. Be confident that the teacher's are really on the ball making sure those who need to be challenged truly are and continue to excel into the their next grade – keeping the advancement progressing. As for the awareness of "who's high" and "who's low" that just goes with the school environment and the competitive nature of the classroom. I noticed that mine made comments in just about every subject in regards to who got "F's" and who got "A's" so very early they're comparing themselves to their classmates. Sometimes it can put added pressure on them but if you just work with them on what they're really strong in and continue to work on the stuff they're not so strong in, they'll deal with it.
