Default Re: Child Boards

Boards are used to try and help organize topics. Child boards are related to the main board, but there are enough conversations about that topic that it needs it's own board.

For example under the board "Open Topics" there is a child board called "The tasting Room". The tasting room is to discuss food and beverages. It is considered an "open Topic", but with more specific conversations. This structure really helps if the forum becomes large and helps to prevent having a huge front page that is difficult to navigate.

Could not one call it something else please? Or is that appropriate lingo these days for some of us that never grew up with a phone, yet alone a computer! Blast! Do I feel old!

How about sub boards. Most forum software either call them child boards or sub boards.

'Sub' sounds more inviting than 'child boards'. Who came up with that name anyway?

I believe it was Linux or Unix? They also have "parent". Not sure of the history behind it though.

Just a little more info for anyone who wants to know.

As Linux (Unix) operating systems rely upon, indeed they are built upon, and thus borrow heavily from object-oriented programming languages such as: C++, etc.. In C++, the idea of Inheritance and Polymorphism are used to describe abstract ideas in variables and data handling.
http://www.codersource.net/cpp_tutor...heritance.html
..where various classes of data, variables, or functions can "inherit" attributes from its predecessors or spawn attributes into future classes of data or functions.

Thus in the realm of operating systems, this idea has followed and translated into the "parent/child" relationships used to describe running (or killed) processes
