Default Why do they publicize DUI checkpoint locations

I noticed on Sunrise past the mall there is a reader board that publicizes the location and date of a DUI checkpoint. Why do they do that? I would think they would catch more people if drivers did not know where and when a checkpoint would be.

They've provided the info to the Bee, too. I always figured they regard public consciousness of the fact they do these sweeps a more effective deterrent than just doing them quietly.

Or perhaps they consider the really really dumb drunks the most dangerous ones?

I was thinking the same thing. Like the visibility of patrolling police. I guess that's it.

I always thought it was to get out of the entrapment argument. Then they could legally say, "It was posted, you coulda avoided that street, but you didn't."

I have never seen that done in any State but California.

Once in Nevada I saw a Guy with a 'hand painted' sign that said:

"Drunk Test A Head"

I saw his photo in the next days paper, along with the Story on his arrest. I don't remember the charge, but the PD didn't take kindly to his advertisement.

I think that is Citrus Heights area I know when the SSD has one, they will say that they are going to do a DUI stop but usually don't say where it will be....when we work them with SSD, we don't even know where they will be until we go to the briefing that evening......hummmmmm, interesting!!!!!

One of the factors considered in determining the legality of a DUI checkpoint is whether it was publicized ahead of time.
