Yep Mama, I heard that also, and wondered what she was really angry about. This is someone who isn't very rational, if she wants to burn something down. If she really wants to make a statement, go to one of the oil company execs and burn his house down for starters!! The gas station owner is the last place to make a point IMHO!!!

Fiesty, the oil companies make about 4% profit on their oil. They have to pump it, refine it, store it and distribute it.

The Federal Government makes about 15% via taxes. I'm no big fan of oil companies, but much more of your gas money is going to the government than it is the oil companies' profits.

Obama doesn't want to reduce the tax burden, even temporarily. McCain does.

This is a short term band-aid. I have have yet to hear either candidate lay down a compressive long term plan.

I'll go with the short term band-aid over the summer. Better than no band-aid at all. But you are right. they should reduce the gas tax burden permanently.

I agree, but still only step up to an Ace bandage. I want to hear a plan to get off foreign oil.

And if the tax money that I pay for my gas is re-invested in roads and infrastructure by the government and doesn't go into the general fund, then I am all for 15%.

Those taxes keep me employed!!

That assumes the money is being efficiently spent. Our government doesn't work that way.

Max - How did you get to work today? Was it on a public road? The roads did not build themselves.

How are your children educated - elementary, middle, high school, college? Did they go to a public school? The schools did not build themselves.

How is the fire on Jackson and Highway 16 being fought? Was it firefighters? They aren't private.

Anyone who constantly complains about government tends to forget what government does for you. Government expenditure keeps my company in business. It's not always efficient, but it is the system we have.

Reducing taxes now on gas is not going to do much in the way of relief but it certainly will take money away from folks who design and build roads. That's me. Sorry for being so selfish.

Don't you think the roads were built before we had a 15% gas tax? Do you think they would stop building them if they reduced the tax burden on us? It's easy for you to say that it's no big deal. What about truckers or farmers? Don't you think a little tax relief would benefit them?

If we were to follow your line of logic, we should increase the gas tax to get even better built roads and bridges. Gosh, lets just make it a 50% tax. The answer is responsible spending. This state and the feds run deficits no matter how much in tax revenue is brought in. You speak as if government is benevolent institution which gives us a bunch of free goodies. Government only returns what we pay for, but it wastes too large a percentage of what we pay for in taxes.

If Congress and the Senate followed McCain's lead by not taking earmarks, we would all be better off for it.
