Default Screen 'em before you See 'em

My favorite site for kid's books, movies, TV shows etc..

Common Sense Media - Family Movie Reviews, Movie Rental Reviews, Family Movies, TV Reviews, Website Reviews, Music CD Reviews and Video Game Reviews

Love it because it has an editor review, parent review and kid's review. Plus it
covers the cross marketing commercialism factor too. Anyway, it's nice to know what you are taking your ( or your friend's ) kids to go see!

For movie's we use The Internet Movie Database (IMDb) Just last night my daughter was at a friends house and called home to see if she can watch a movie she was unsure about. (what a good kid )

We pulled it up on IMDb looked for the link that said "Parents Guide: View content advisory for parents". It gives a very detailed description of sexual content, violence, profanity, alcohol/drugs/smoking, and frightening/intense scenes. We had to say no the first movie, but yes to the second.

I wouldn't put 100% trust in that site.

Out of boredom of epic proportions, I decided to check out the video games section of the site. I checked out the review for Grand Theft Auto IV. I highly doubt they have actually played the title.

First off, it claims that the violence is shown is gory detail. In reality, it's blood. No excessive detail like some films will have. Violence isn't glorified and rewarded in the game. As a matter of fact, it's quite the opposite. If I decide to pull out a pistol and shoot someone cops will come and I will be dead fast. You lose money (which, by the way, you don't get by going on rampages).

As for the commercialism, it just looks like they were trying to add another negative. Movies with commercial music in them don't seem to get marked for commercialism on the website. The Social Club is something else completely separate from the game.

The Spore Creature Creator has red on the "message." I'm not exactly sure why...The only thing I can think of is bias against Spore's evolution theme. Not accusing though. Also, as far as I am aware there is no drug/alcohol/etc use in the demo (nor the actual game) so I have no idea where this coming from...and I have played this demo quite a lot by myself and with friends. Honestly, the worst you can do is make a penis monster which alone requires creativity and effort to make something that looks like a deformed penis...

I'm not saying discredit the site completely but some things are greatly exaggerated...

I'm thinking he just wanted to see how many times he could use the word penis. LOL

Thanks HoC for the thoughtful and insightful review. I appreciate it.

BTW - Deformed Penis Monster

Hmmm maybe we could borrow it for the moderators board. As in " Man! That post was a DPM! Delete! Delete! Oh the Humanity Delete!"

I have never played the game, but "heard" you get extra points for killing cops. Is that not the case?

If by points you mean death, then yeah, pretty accurate.

So if you kill a police officer in the game you die?

It ultimately will result in you dying. You don't gain anything for killing officers, you do however, lose things.
