Red vs black in a financial sense. This Friday should put retailer in the black for the year.

The link below gives the history of Black Friday. The term now refers to when the retailers move out of the red and into the black on their income statement. Red=loss; black=income.

You couldn't pay me enough to go out there and fight the crowds!! I did it ONCE years ago with my mom and I thought I would certainly need valium before the day was over!! I am more content to shop in the early fall months and get my bargains then. I am also more content to stay FAR AWAY from most if not all retail establishments on this particular day and also on 12/26!!

not me, i worked retail for over 31 years, and i wouldn't do that to anyone who is still out there. i went today and got the best deals yet, and no crowds... did you know that one of the stores is going to open at 4am?

My daughter, a district manager for a women's clothing company, insists it is called green Friday by retailers, because that's when the annual profits begin to turn green rather than red. Not a clue where the "black" came from.

You and I have an alma mater in common...I worked for Sears in San Francisco for 12 years....had to leave due to husband accepting a position in Vallejo...worked there for a few years then left.....It's all very different now...I was there during the 60's....started out as a salesgirl and ended up the switchboard operator supervisor.....we had a 1929 corded switchboard.....I really enjoyed the "Sears Days" events...I performed in many of the shows we put on at the store...we were like family....don't think it's like that anymore....What a shame!!!!!

i do remember all the sears days as well,we still had them until about 1990. i started out in their catolog and ended up sales manager in home fashion. and yes i did enjoy working for them. and i still shop with sears. matter of fact i've been going to the florin store for some car service. like windshild wipers replaced, and a head lamp replaced what great service i got there. they are not closed as someone had said when i first moved out here.
