This mission is not only historic because this will complete the core of the station, it's also the first and probably LAST time that two female mission commanders will be on the shuttle at the same time. The shuttle's commander is a woman AND the station's next commander is also a woman. The station CO is hitching a ride on the shuttle. Shortly after arriving on the station, there will be a Change of Command Ceremony and she'll be officially in charge.

Very historic day from that aspect as well!

This has and always will be a sore subject with me. What is the end product that equals the cost I ask? BILLIONS are being spent on space projects that could be put to better use on the planet we now inhabit. "Jobs for the boys comes to mind"

It appears that I have heard the news wrong.. but now I've got it right from NASA itself... the ISS Commander is a woman. She's up there now. Once Discovery docks, it will be the first and last time that two active female commanders will be aboard the ISS. Peggy Wilson is the ISS Commander and Pamela A. Melroy is commander of STS-120 (Shuttle Discovery).

Yes, a lot of money is spent on Space Flight. What you probably don't know or care to know is that NASA also does a LOT of research in the areas of climate and weather, navigation, underwater living, and a whole host of other things. By far, the most visible thing that NASA does is their manned spaceflight programs. Oh, and they also launch a lot of commercial satellites, weather satellites, communications satellites... and so on.
