Default RVT Article Reactions

I'll admit, I don't read the RVT with any frequency, but according to some postings on rm.com, things are getting hot and heavy.

Are the pieces done by the commentary folks that bad? If so, why is it so hard to find folks that can put a decent piece togther?

Part of me thinks it's a way to sell papers...say stuff that people will react to. Okay, maybe a large part of me thinks that.

You know, I think I am glad to be blissfully ignorant as to the meanings of each the political parties. I do not know what it means to be a Democrat, a Republican (although I am one), a Liberal, a Conservative, a Left Wing or a Right Wing. Why, because I am probably a little bit of all of them. I am human.

I would hate to be like some of you and dissect every little thing and turn it into a political agenda.

I would hate to be talking to my friends and in the back of my mind saying "oh they must be a Conservative Republican" "OMG, they must be a Liberal". Geeze guys & gals, get over yourselves!

If you had the opportunity to read the RVT opinion by Ms Threlkeld and the rant by D. Campbell and an equally senseless comment by Andy Keyes. you might agree that Campbell and Keyes go a long way towards validating Ms Threlkelds premise.

What I read in the RVT was an comment that it is important to allow divergent opinions to help protect our rights and freedom. Ms Threlkeld also said that many people insulate themselves by only "hearing" opinions that they agree with. Keyes and Campbell then proved her point by attacking her and anyone who might suggest a different opinion.

Wilbur said it well in his response. I get awfully tired of the insults, threats and name calling from certain people in our society. Gee, I am glad Keyes was brave enough to cancel his Bee subscription and advocate littering with the RVT. Now Ms Campbell equates treason and disagreeing with her viewpoint. Everyone she hates is a "liberal". Only she knows what a liberal is and what they believe. I sure don't know.

I only saw the post by D. Campbell. It got me to thinking about what a great country this is that not only can Kitty T have her opinions/point of view (which I didn't find offensive in any way), but Ms. Campbell can also not only HAVE hers too, she can put her thoughts out there for the www to see! I found myself hearing more of a "rant" from her and, thus, kinda tuned it out. I also wondered why she didn't throw her hat in the ring (well, maybe she did) when the commentary position was opened after Julie Rollofson left.

Regardless of the content, I enjoy reading Ms. Threlkeld's piece each week as she seems to know how to write. Nobody said we have to agree with all that she submits each week, and nobody said we have to read it either.

That "it's a free country" thing really is great...

That's amusing Wakeupcall. You're the guy who painted Bush and his "cronies" with conspiracies and the like.

Ms. Threlkeld's columns are often riddled with incorrect facts, poor analogies (give me a break on the pit bull analogy in yesterday's RVT) and logical gaps the size of the Grand Canyon. She is cut from the same cloth as Ms. Rudloff who had the same problems IMO. I actually believe Ms. Threlkeld helps the opposing view more than her own anyway.

But, the job opened up, everyone had a chance to apply and she took it, so it is her right to say what she wants to say. We all know we can write letters to the editor if we feel strongly enough about it, as I have in the past. The lady at RVT who I worked with when I wrote a letter (Judith) was polite and published what I wrote. I think that sometimes people look to the letters to the editor before they look at the Threlkeld article.

So I say good for her, and good for Mr. Keyes and Mr. Campbell for responding too! Let's (our community) mix it up an have some fun.

AP style writing, which is what the majority of the RVT is-does not allow for a reporters opinion. Facts only. What Kitty submits is an opinion column. Those who don't get it-it blows me away. Right or wrong, left or right, we agree or we don't-it is her opinion. It is not an attack, but if someone chooses to air their side that's fine too. Again, we can always take something away from an informed well written opinion piece. We are not all so overloaded with our own knowledge on an issue that seeing another perspective could somehow hurt us.

much agreed that the "opinion" part of it really isn't the issue.

However, I agree with Maxims, that her conclusions could use a little more factual support. THAT would be an opion I would value, but again, I tend not to have much confidence in what she writes because she seems to get a little out there with her conclusions.

I'm not even talking about politics, but sound, defensible, writing.
