Default Meth Lab Chemicals Dumped Near Rancho Murieta

A sizeable cache of dangerous chemicals, used to make the illegal drug methamphetamine were found Wednesday along Michigan Bar Road in eastern Sacramento County.

A county worker spotted the dumped chemicals and equipment about 2 p.m. Wednesday.

"There's about 25 to 40 five-gallon containers that have been thrown away there," said Sacramento Metro Fire spokesman Christian Pebbles. "There's a significant amount of byproduct of flammable liquid they used, so they were making some product."

Narcotics agents estimated the chemicals would have been enough to make at least a pound of the powerful drug.

Hazardous materials workers from Sacramento County sealed off Michigan Bar Road at Highway 16 until they could be sure the area was safe for locals to drive by.

"A lot of the product seems to be contained inside the the buckets and inside the bags, so hopefully, we haven't destroyed too much of our environment out here," said Pebbles.

The dump is less than a mile from the eastern edge of the affluent communit of Rancho Murieta. Local residents say they're glad the wind was blowing away from homes.

"It's so close that if the wind's blowing the right way, it could be potentially dangerous," said homeowner Carol Marks.

As word of the discovery spread, many residents were upset at the callousness of those who did the dumping.

"A potential hazard; risk to the air, the water, kids running around biking and it's a scary thing," said Chris Williams, chef and owner of the StoneHouse restaurant.

Narcotics agents will go through the debris and containers at the crime scene carefully, looking for clues that might lead them to the those who did the dumping.

Very bad. Maybe it was dumped from further up Jackson Hwy? Can't imagine having a Meth Lab in a place as populated as RM. Can't expect people who manufacture Meth to be anything other than "callous" about human life. Hopefully they are as idiotic as the people who dump on Latrobe and they left receipts with their name on it.

sorry ping...meth labs are all over the place...wouldn't surprise me if one was out here.

One in four meth labs are found after they explode...dangerous stuff.

I thought the smell would prohibit making it in a place where they could get busted?

Or my thought when watching this on TV, what about fingerprints on the containers...hopefully there are and hopefully they are in the system to be found.

when I went to classes for VIPS, I learned a lot about these meth labs and the people who make the stuff. One of the characteristics of a meth house is a whole bunch of half done projects because when these druggies are "high" they has a whole bunch of energy and start lots of projects, but don't very often finish anything. I saw pictures of some of these places and the yards were a mess with piles of crap everywhere. Also, it requires lots of different people doing lots of different jobs to make this all come together, so they would stick out in a place like ours. Lets remember, we are a fairly close knit community so this kind of place would have already been blabbed about by someone.
We live in area where there are lots of houses in out of the way places from Plymouth to Ione so it is more likely it is in one of these towns, IMHO.

All the foothill counties are known for such labs. I lived in Amador County for several years and such busts were fairly common; at one point, they moved the labs from houses/structures to vans and became mobile meth labs. It is pretty well known that the foothills are a hotbed of chemical production and we're just "down the road."

Me too Nana and you are so right. We used to joke about the neighborhood
"it's a mix.. great neighbor, great neighbor, meth lab, great neighbor..." plus I think we had some secret pot plantations. Scary because of the people used to guard the cash crop. Still miss the old place though.
