Default An Indian Casino In Wilton?

Quote:
The Wilton Miwok Rancheria, fresh from winning federal tribal recognition, has tripped alarms among Sacramento County and Elk Grove officials about effects on local communities if the tribe eventually opens a casino.

. . .

"We don't know if we have a problem yet," Hahn said. "The concern is that the Wilton community has had no chance to hear or talk about it.

"There is now a recognition that (the tribe) … conceivably could build a casino," Hahn said. "We're trying to slow this thing down and go through a typical process."

Gill said a casino would affect traffic on Grant Line and Wilton roads – thoroughfares used by Elk Grove residents and the main connectors for the community of Wilton. "We're worried about the ability to maintain our thoroughfare network and be able to ensure public safety," Gill said.
Elk Grove, Sacramento County alarmed that newly recognized tribe may seek Indian casino in Wilton - Elk Grove News - sacbee.com

I don't believe a casino would benefit Wilton. It will be interesting to see what happens.

I agree Matt....Wilton is NOT the place for a casino. With the cut backs in the Sheriff Dept. they are lucky to have a single unit patrol and respond to crime now. I realize it would take years to get all the permits and begin to build but I still don't think it's a good idea. Don't they have enough casinos in the area? I know of 3.....!!

No worries, I doubt the casino will ever happen. There are already a glut of casinos within 50 miles and Ione would've happened a long time before this one ever gets built.

The saturation and failing economy is already driving down profits on all the casinos in the areas. Thunder Valley had to lay off a large chunk of their employees, Redhawk (who promised to over hire and not lay off) had to lay off much of their excess employees, Jackson Rancheria is slowly bleeding off their employees. Their respective EBITDA is hovering around 75-80%.

I think the tribe is just glad to have their recognition back.

If a casino is ever built, I bet they "re-discover" some ancient tribal lands amazingly close to the Dillard/Highway 99 interchange.

If a casino did happen (and I hope it doesn't, for a lotta reasons...mostly cuz I have friends that have made a wonderful life for themselves and their families in Wilton), Luke is right, closer to the highway would be a "better" place for it.

Would SSD be the policing force for tribal land? Casino or not?

Tribal land is sovereign land, so they would have their own police force or contract it out.

Would Tribal Land have their own Fire Department, Sewer Treatment, Power Generation, etc?

How would they do that?

Build it.

Staff it.

Do it.

My guess is they'd likely tie into SMUD or PG&E for power. But they could build their own turd-herding operation and have their own police department. With actual police powers cuz it's likely there would be an actual NEED for that at a casino.

I haven't paid good attention, but I remember seeing something about Red Hawk and the local fire department up there. Sounds like they've contracted that out with the locals. I suppose that could be done too.

Try to sue a sovereign nation (tribe). Unless you can get the case heard in federal court you won't have much luck. You also don't have mechanics lien rights if you have contracted with a tribe and they decide not to pay. Work for a tribe and break your leg. They don't have to have worker's comp. Go to a casino and get hurt based on the tribes negligence. Good luck getting any recourse.

Lots of reasons to be wary of spending too much time on or with a tribe in my opinion. Think of it as going to another country; you better know their laws and customs.

Great analogy, 2112! I'm not going to work for them!

Likely I won't even visit (the Lord of The Manor takes a ride every now and then up to Red Hawk...thankfully, he's brought more of their money back than what he's left...or so he says!). If I'm gonna throw away money, I like going to South Lake Tahoe!
