It's time to focus and support some of the good kids that just quietly get it done.

I was a bit dismayed that in the RVT article the young man with good intentions is centering his "green" campaign on the use of CFL's. These bulbs when improperly disposed of which many will be years from now, will be a mercury bomb leaking into the groundwater. Congrads to those who would attempt to ban or deceive the public not to use a non poluting presently used staple. I would hope he pursues something other than something that makes General Electric smile at the expense of the next generations water supply.

More yaposphere blather.
The EPA says use of CFL's reduces overall mercury emissions even after accounting for landfill releases.

How do CFLs result in less mercury in the environment compared to traditional light
bulbs?
Electricity use is the main source of mercury emissions in the U.S. CFLs use less electricity than incandescent
lights, meaning CFLs reduce the amount of mercury into the environment. As shown in the table below, a 13-watt,
8,000-rated-hour-life CFL (60-watt equivalent; a common light bulb type) will save 376 kWh over its lifetime, thus
avoiding 4.5 mg of mercury. If the bulb goes to a landfill, overall emissions savings would drop a little, to 4.2 mg.
EPA recommends that CFLs are recycled where possible, to maximize mercury savings.

While the debate on current and future poluution and other problems is indeed interesting and valuable. This thread is to mark the accomplishment and labor of a young man and his Eagle Scout project. Let's let the young man shine for a moment. We can have our discussion later at the end of class.

Brian, congratulations. This community is very proud of you. I have a son in the Cub Scouts and you are an inspiration. Good work!
