Default Drug Education Class

There will be a drug education class here in RM on August 14th at 7pm. It will be taught by two narcotics detectives and should last about an hour and half. This class is designed to teach people about illegal drugs, the dangers of prescription drugs, drug paraphernalia, and symptoms of drug abuse.

The class is not about "what are we going to do about drugs in RM". It's basically designed to educate parents on what to look for when it comes to drugs and their children.

I am still putting together the details, but wanted to post something so you can reserve a spot on your calendar.

That's great....we had one a few years ago and I don't think it did much good.....but we can always hope. There were only a few parents there and some teens....I recall a few of the parents that attended and I believe their kids are still doing drugs....but perhaps a reminder will be of some help. Incidently, I spoke to a young fella recently and he told me the drug of choice now is Oxy.......

I plan to send out a personal email to my friends. I think that might be a good way to go. Even though our kids are young it's good info to have for babysitters, family members etc. Also, we can consolidate child care.

Oxycontin/Oxycodone. That's the drug of choice these days. It's relatively easy to find and if you skim it off of someone who already has a prescription for it, they might never know. It's possible to fake enough pain to get a doc to write you a prescription for it.

The good news is that if you OD on the stuff, a Paramedic can reverse the effects fairly easily. The bad news is that usually the "other" pain reliever is tylenol. Its effects, in large enough doses, is fatal and it's not a particularly fast or nice death.

Terrible. Just got heart wrenching blow by blows about a family where both parents are addicted to crack. Hard to imagine anything worse. This meeting is so needed.

I would much rather see this kind of education rather than the scare tactics so commonly used. I also like the idea of tackling illegal use of legal drugs, which in my estimation is much more dangerous then most illicit drugs out there.

Maybe especially to our population of kids. But, I'd like to see what the detectives say on that. It sounds like, Meth, Crank and Crack are so addictive a lapse in judgement (or a few drinks) could lead to very serious consequences. And maybe ( I hate to say it likely) it's available at High School. And cheap.

I suspect that people think that prescription drugs are OK because they're prescription and no doctor is going to prescribe something that is going to kill you. You know, it's prescription, so it's safe... Yeah right. Oxycontin will kill you just as dead.
