Just an FYI to golf cart drivers. Snowygirl just received a ticket for crossing the highway while not wearing a seat belt. The CHP said he will be out enforcing this all week.

What?!

The Rancho Murieta Golf Cart and NEV Circulation Plan does not require seatbelts to cross Jackson Hwy. They are recommended but not required. You can find this document at ranchomurietaweb.org, resources, other RMA documents. The safety requirements required for crossing SR 16 are on page 18. Edited to add: I just realized that the requirements for crossing SR 16 are also listed in the Executive Summary, bottom of page 1.

Here is the link to the Plan, if all goes well.

Oh crickey. I don't have seat belts on my cart. Good incentive but seems like there's plenty to worry about if we get hit in our RMmobiles.

A question here please. If some person is injured or maimed, by a wayward Golf Cart "driver' ': what are the consequences? What type of insurance covers the injured party? Car insurance, home owners or whatnot? Guess you can tell I not a golfer.

It depends on the insurance carrier. Some require the cart be with the auto insurance carrier. I have very high limits on my cars and golf cart. Other insurers cover the cart on the homeowners.

Generally speaking, same legal principles apply to the cart as they do a car. The injury can be wholly or partially the fault of the driver and/or the person hit.

My policy specifically says that I would not be covered if an accident occurs on a public road. I have seat belts in the back for the kids, but will get them now for the front seats. I warned a couple going across that the cop was waiting, but they went ahead and were pulled over.

Snowy you should challenge the ticket and maybe CSD should speak to that officer. This plan went thru a lot of hullabalu to get approved, by whatever government agency approves that sort of thing, so that we can legally cross Hwy 16.

Here is the link to the Plan, if all goes well.

Document Viewer

Page 18 gives MINIMUM requirements (lights and horn) and goes on to say "may be equipped". Seatbelts are in that area.

I'd definitely challenge it and, if it were me, I'd be calling the South Gate to see if they can dispatch a patrol officer to go have a chat with the CHP officer if he's still laying in wait and show him a printed version of the document showing him where he's misguided.

I just spoke with a gate officer. CSD probably won't be any help at this time.
