RMA vehicle's tires slashed again

Published August 11, 2008

The Rancho Murieta Association vehicle used for compliance enforcement had its tires slashed over the weekend, the second tire-slashing to hit the SUV in a week.
Ian Hunt, the RMA's compliance officer, discovered the vandalism when he reported for work Monday morning. Hit were tires that had been replaced the other day, after the first incident. "The tires didn't have 10 miles on them," Hunt said.
He said a hole was punched in the sidewalls of the tires both times.
The vehicle was parked in the RMA lot. In both incidents, the vandals hit the side of the car away from the street.

friggin' ridiculous. Reminds me of the bridge vandalism. Sure feels like someone is saying screw you I can get away with this more than once. Can we not park the compliance vehicle up at the maintenance yard? Then again I don't put it past someone to hop the fence up there either.

I think I would have moved the car to the yard at the top of Stonehouse, which is where all the vehicles should most likely be stored. Not saying it's the victim's fault but maybe a bit if precaution is necessary?

This is also an instance where security cameras could help. Can't have them everywhere, but you can have them aimed at predictable targets and "problem areas".

I'll try my hand at amateur profiling..
This "feels" like an unbalanced adult or angry kid. I'm ready to invest my time and some money to work towards a solution. Camera's sound like a good start. I'm still hopeful for Neighborhood Watch. I really think this is exactly the kind of crime that can be deterred.

why spend money on a camera, when you can first try parking in another place? It's free. Doesn't RMA park its other vehicles up on the hill?

Why should "we" adjust our normal behavior for criminals? Maybe we just shouldn't own anything that criminals may want to have or damage?

I think the cameras are an excellent idea, and I think they are a small investment for actually catching and putting a stop to these "people"

I think it is prudent to safeguard one's assets. Isn't buying a camera, installing and monitoring that camera changing one's behavior also? Would you propose having a camera posted everywhere past vandalism took place?

I have to wonder who would pay for it- CSD or RMA? It sounds like CSD has the wireless infrastructure, but the cameras can be pretty pricey if you want to see any detail. Any good camera will allow you to see that something was happening (make out specific bodies and objects), but being able to decipher WHO is doing the deed is a different caliber of camera. We've all seen security tapes on the news. And per location, it wouldn't be a single camera operation, if you're looking to be able to see the detail it sounds like we might want (perhaps license plate detail, car make/model, maybe clothing detail?). Its a huge area to cover. Do either budges have any room for this? It would be great if they could make room for it in the coming years- I think they'd be a great asset.
